This pendant is one of my prized geek possessions & one of my favorite con stories.
When I was little I wanted to be Storm when I grew up. (to be fair I also wanted to be an astronaut, dinosaur, cheese making opera singer, fashion designer, and center fielder) When we would play X-Men, the boys would spend their time arguing over who got to be Wolverine while I saved the day, because I was Storm, duh. Storm was my hero.
Last year at Denver Comic Con I was lucky enough to meet Mike McKone. Mike is an amazing artist and a great guy. Originally I met him and fell in love with the prints of Wonder Woman and She-Ra he had, then I saw them. His pictures of Storm. Mohawk Storm! I was thrilled to get to meet one of the artists behind one of my favorite interpretations of my favorite childhood hero. Saying I was giddy, might have been an understatement.
This last summer Mike & I joked that we were con stalking each other. We ended up at 3 of the same conventions. At the last convention I got a chance to get my Mohawk Storm pendant signed by him. Totally awesome!
I wish I could say having my pendant signed was an idea I came up with on my own, but it’s not. Early last year we had a gal get her mom a Captain Pickard pendant to get it signed when she met Patrick Stewart. Since then we’ve had several folks get pendants to have them signed. I have to agree this is a fantastic way to take a cool pendant and make it into a super keepsake.
What do you think? Neat momento?

Mohawk storm. Next week not so much on super heroes.
It’s Marvel’s Odd Couple for 2013, Storm & Psylocke! I’ve been wanting to draw these new costumes for ages, but been too busy. Shout out to Kris Anka for designing the best costumes these characters have ever had.
(I have no idea what these weird background shape things are lately. A lazy person not wanting it to be on plain white, I guess…)
Yeah! Mohawk Storm!

Done for Illustration Friday. Probably two hours total.
It might not be obvious, but there’s some initial pokes at doing more digital painting rather than just straight-up comic book-style drawing. But man do i have a long way to go.

The epic-ness of Storms Mohawk continues to grow as people search panels of the X-men Comics from the 80’s for treasures like this one.
